If you didn’t know, squirrels like bird feeders. While trying to bring more nature into our house during the rainy season, we got a new bird feeder (check it out here!– aff link) that we put right on the window of our living room. It’s amazing to see the little birds come right up to your window for a snack, but lately a big squirrel has been bullying our birds, scaring them away and eating up all our food. Bodhi goes from livid to out of control with excitement when he tries to sneak in. We’re just rolling with it, learning about these little furry animals and having some fun. Here are some of our “squirrels are trying to sneak into your bird feeder” recommendations.
Also, there’s an entire adult book devoted to this. This amazes me! Outwitting Squirrels: 101 Cunning Stratagems to Reduce Dramatically the Egregious Misappropriation of Seed from Your Birdfeeder by Squirrels by Bill Adler Jr.
The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game (aff link)
This is one of our favorites and it’s a great introduction to games. You get to practice colors, sorting, turn-taking and strategy while you try to fill your log up with acorns. But don’t let the sneaky squirrel steal any!
Those Darn Squirrels! by Adam Rubin (aff link)
We stumbled upon this one at the library and LOVE it! It’s a hilarious, silly story about a man who loves birds but hates the squirrels who try to take their food. Bodhi loves to pretend he’s the grumpy man in this book when the squirrels get into our feeder. There’s also a great ending to this one!
The Busy Little Squirrel by Nancy Tafuri (aff link)
This is the book we love to read with my 1.5 year-old. It shows how a squirrel prepares for the winter. It has pumpkins, acorns, squirrels, animals. It’s a 16-month-old’s dream.
